Research: How to make a short film

One tip for making a short film that I got was to subvert expectations in your film. Subverting expectations can help make the film more unpredictable and unique to the audience. A film that has the same ideas and tropes gets repetitive and stale. This can often make it unenjoyable to watch for people. An example of this is a predictable jumpscare which viewers can anticipate it.  When the audience can anticipate it, it reduces anxiety and fearful emotions from viewers. A better alternative that was stated is to do something you wouldn't normally do, to trick yourself and the audience in the process. Another idea suggested by the video was to stick to your genre and follow it. In this case, it would be mystery for the film genre being used. An example of the mystery genre being followed would be very ominous music and shadowy figures to avoid the viewers from getting a proper description on any characters or surroundings to help build tension and confusion. Similarly, the tone plays an important factor as a consistent and confident tone helps structure the film. If a film is inconsistent in tone, the film can be hard to understand and can feel janky at times. The video states the importance of sound in a film and how it shouldn't be ignored. Sound can tell a story in itself or can be used to enhance the visuals. It is also important to manage your resources accordingly and to play into your strengths. If someone can act well then include them in multiple scenes to strengthen the overall film performance. Lastly, peer reviews are a great way to finalize the film and help to get a different perspective on the execution. Take the criticism and feedback you receive and change the film accordingly based on it. Onto what I'd like for the film I'm making. I personally love seeing heavily edited films and videos as they entertain me a lot more than a simpler production. I also like the idea of using sounds to tell a story and will make sure to include that in the film.
